| He was elected a member of the academic committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1980. Before the 1970s, he committed himself to the study of China's physical geography and karst. He made great contributions to the expansion of China's rubber plantation area. In recent 30 years, he committed himself to the study of coast science. He has made great achievements in the study of the evolution and development of the Huanghe River Delta, and the impact of human activity on sediment transport of the Huanghe River and North China coast (from the perspective of global change), the impact of the changes of China's relative sea level on the social and economic development in coastal zones. He is the only scientist who got the Victoria Medal, the highest honor in the international geographic circle in China. He has successively served as director of the Nanjing Institute of Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, dean of the Oceanography Department of Nanjing University, honorary president of the executive council of the China Society of Oceanography and the China Society of Geography.
His works, Heilongjiang - The Northest Part of Our China, The Conspectus of Karstology, The Three Big Deltas in China, The Compendium of China's Physical Geography, are collected in "Local Literature Collection of Works by Celebrities of Ningbo Natives" of the Ningbo Municipal Library.
