| He was born in 1933, a native of Zhenhai, Zhejiang. He graduated from the Department of Road and Bridge of Tongji University and majored in bridges and tunnel engineering. At present, he is a professor of the School of Civil Engineering of Tongji University (supervisor of doctoral students), the executive deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention in Civil Engineering, and a specialist with outstanding contributions in China. At present, he is chairman of China Group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering(IABSE), alternative member of the standing committee of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), member of the Committee of the EASEC International Direction and Execution, managing director of the China Society of Civil Engineering, president of the executive council of the Sub-Society of Bridge and Structural Engineering of the China Society of Civil Engineering. In 2001, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
Prof. Fan Lichu has been engaging in teaching and scientific studies in the last forty years. He made a number of great research achievements in bridge and structural design theory and anti-quake field. He has served as the editor-in-chief of more than 10 textbooks and monographs of scientific studies. Since 1990, he has published nearly 150 papers and cultivated more than 40 postdoctoral students, doctoral candidatesand MA students. He founded the Bridge Anti-Quake Study Office of the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention in Civil Engineering, and built a quality and stable study team of the discipline. He creationary put forward a bridge anti-quake design theory of three level fortification and three stage design and took the lead to do systematic study of anti-quake design theory and method of long span bridges. He presided over the development of large-scale application software which has been used in the design of more than 20 key bridge projects in China. He has compiled two anti-quake design manuals. In China, he took part in the State-level programs in the 7th, 8th, 9th Five Year Period. Successively, he won the Mao Yisheng Award of Bridge (Individual Achievement), National Award of Science and Technology Advancement, Provincial and Ministerial Awards of Science and Technology Advancement, and Award of Excellent Textbook for College and University Students. He is the public-recognized pioneer and founder of China’s bridge anti-quake discipline.
At present, he is a member of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering(IABSE), chairman of China Group of the IABSE. He has actively taken part in academic activities and conducted cooperation with scholars and research institutions in other countries and areas, such as the US, Canada, Germany, and Hong Kong. Now, the State Center of Seismological Studies of the USA invites Prof. Fang to establish a long-term academic liaison agency and conduct an academic symposium on yearly basis with the topic of the Anti-quake Design of Special Bridges. Due to his outstanding achievements in the discipline of bridge anti-quake design, he enjoys an international fame. |
