| He was elected a member of the academic committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1991. He is the first topography scholar who got the doctor's degree. In 1974, he put forward China's geocentric coordinate conversion parameters for the first time. In the 1980s, he deducted a complete set of computation formula of parameters for "geodesy reference system in 1980", which was adopted by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and has been in use so far. In 1975, he took charge of the computation work of China's Everest Height Measurement and got the most accurate number of the height of the Everest so far. In recent 20 years, he has made outstanding contributions to the development of China's topographical science. He is the former director of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, president of the executive council of China Society of Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Topography, vice-chairman of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG).At present, he is director of the S&T Committee of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, and vice-chairman of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).
His works, The Modern Direction Theory of Ground Reference System and Earth's Rotation, The Shape of Earth, Satellite Doppler Positioning, are collected in "Local Literature
