| He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1997. He has been engaging in the study of the structure of nucleic acid for a long time. In the 1980s, he proposed some strategic scientific research programs and finished the program of DNA sequence determination. In the e1990s, he established high temperature DNA sequence determination system which successfully entered the international market. He discovered the nucleic acid protein complex in biological nitrogen fixation which controls the nodulation of plant roots and put forward the molecular model which controls the nodulation gene. He made the decisive breakthrough in building the physical graph of rice paddy genome. He ever served as a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Human Genome Science under UNESCO. At present, he is a research fellow in the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and director of the State Gene Research Center of CAS.
His two works, Rice Paddy Genome Program and The Future of Nitrogen Fixation, are collected in "Local Literature Collection of Works by Celebrities of Ningbo Natives"of the Ningbo Municipal Library.
