| He was elected a member of the academic committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1991, elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. He has made important contributions in several fields, such as mechanic engineering (especially fluidic transmission and its control) and engineering education. Working on the basis of the predecessors in the same field, he creatively put forward some new principles such as “the feedback of system flow testing force” and “the direct testing and feedback of system pressure” which were applied to outrider flow and pressure controller parts by himself first. He presided over a series of research of new type of electrohydraulic controller parts and system project. He presided over the research and development of corresponding CAD and CAT supporting systems which have been widely used in the industry sector. He was former President of Zhejiang University. At present, he serves as President of Chinese Academy of Sciences，a member of the National Natural Science Foundation (NSF), and deputy director of Academic Degrees Committee of State Council.
His works entitled Technology of Electrohydraulic Percentage Control and Symbolic Logic Oriented to the Computer Science are collected in “Local Literature • Collection of Works by Celebrities of Ningbo Natives” of the Ningbo Municipal Library.
